âCome on, just turn around and go back home,â Abby muttered. âYou donât have to be here. There is no reason for it.â
She sighed and shook her head. âYou donât need this bullshit in your life. Casey doesnât need it. All youâre doing is torturing yourself.â
Her indecision lasted the entire length of the drive. She hated that she was going there, and no amount of white lies she told herself seemed to help. Abby knew in her heart she was going for the sole purpose of driving past her motherâs house. In earnest, sheâd distracted herself by thinking of all the things sheâd say to the woman. She hated that her anger over MaryAnn was consuming her. Their life had been a good one, charmed even in some regards. Their father always made sure they had everything they needed. He had been all the parent that either girl could ever need.
It was the want, though, that killed her. They didnât need MaryAnn in their lives growing up, but they had wanted her there; at least Abby had. On the other hand, Casey had always had Abby to look up to and take care of her. Abby carried most of the burden when it came to missing MaryAnn. There were some things in life that a young girl becoming a woman needed a mother for. Oliver had triedâbless his heartâbut he couldnât replace MaryAnn in some regards, and for that, Abby hated her mother.
Grinding her teeth together, her hands tightened on the wheel as she pulled into her motherâs town. Her heart was racing as the GPS led her to the address in question. Abby pulled into a parking spot across the road, looking at the quaint house as her heart continued to pound in her ears. Suddenly, a woman emerged with a pair of gardening sheers. The color drained from Abbyâs face as she watched MaryAnn. The woman paused and looked up, her eyes moving to Abbyâs as a look of shock crossed over it.
Her fight-or-flight instinct took hold as Abby peeled away from the residential area and down the road. Going there had been a mistake. Her hands shook as she quickly programmed the GPS to take her to the nearest art store. Never again would she return to the address. MaryAnn wasnât dead. Instead, she was a heartless creature, happy to abandon her kids. She didnât deserve to see either of them ever again.
Within just a few minutes, she was pulling into the art store she found on her GPS. A million thoughts ran through her head, and the only thing she wanted to do was forget the whole thing. Her mother had abandoned her and her sister a long time ago. She quickly paced through the store, finding one item or another that she needed to paint. Art, she thought, the only thing that truly made her feel whole again.
Though she was trying to push the memory of just seeing her mother for the first time in a long time out of her mind, Abby found herself reverting back to the image over and over.
